The Sleep of Reason

Charles Frye has lost everything: his wife, his career, his wealth, his self-respect. He very nearly lost his liberty.

He’s saved from complete despair by an art-loving old friend, Vincent Damon, who invites him to live at his Hudson River Valley estate. There, Frye begins his rehabilitation by staging tableau vivants, living reproductions of famous paintings—which is the peculiar fetish of a group of powerful men.

Frye busies himself finding performers, creating costumes, arranging sets, passing out cash, and dealing with the strange people who can help him make it all happen. The work is bizarre, even eerie, but he does it well, better than he could have guessed, and so he presses on blindly.

But after being subtly manipulated into making his reproduction of The Death of Marat more “lifelike”, Frye realizes he’s been trapped in a nightmarish tableau himself.

He knows too much to be allowed to walk away … and even more horrific demands are on the horizon.
